How many centimetres are in an inch?
Exactly 2.54 cm. One foot is 30.48 cm and one metre is about 3.281 feet.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. So 25 °C = 77 °F, and 100 °C = 212 °F.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
MB (megabyte) is 1,000,000 bytes. MiB (mebibyte) is 1,048,576 bytes. Operating systems often show MiB but label it MB.
What is a unit converter?
A unit converter changes a measurement from one unit to another without changing the quantity itself, for example turning 170 centimetres into feet and inches or 70 kilograms into pounds. For most units it multiplies or divides by an exact conversion factor. Temperature is the exception: Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin start from different zero points, so they need a formula rather than a single factor.
India and most of the world use the metric system, while the US still uses inches, pounds, miles, gallons and Fahrenheit in daily life. That mix is why a quick unit converter is handy for recipes, online shopping, travel, property listings, fitness tracking and schoolwork.
Worked examples
Height: 170 cm in feet and inches
- Divide by 2.54 to get inches: 170 ÷ 2.54 = 66.93 inches.
- Divide by 12 to get feet: 66.93 ÷ 12 = 5 feet with 6.93 inches left over.
- Result: 170 cm is about 5 ft 7 in. Going the other way, 5 ft 7 in = 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm.
Weight: 70 kg in pounds
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds (because 1 lb is exactly 0.45359237 kg). So 70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.32 lb. In reverse, 150 lb × 0.45359237 = 68.04 kg.
Temperature: body and oven temperatures
Use °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. A normal body temperature of 37 °C is 37 × 1.8 + 32 = 98.6 °F. An oven set to 180 °C is 356 °F, which is why US recipes usually round it to 350 °F (that is 176.7 °C). The two scales meet at −40, where −40 °C equals −40 °F.
Area: a 1,200 sq ft flat in square metres
One square foot is 0.09290304 square metres, so 1,200 × 0.09290304 = 111.48 sq m. To go from square metres to square feet, multiply by 10.7639.

For land in India, local units such as bigha, biswa or guntha vary from state to state, so it is safest to convert them into square feet or square metres using the official figure for your state before comparing prices.
Tips and common mistakes
- US vs UK gallons: a US gallon is 3.785 litres, but an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 litres. Fuel economy figures from the UK and US are not directly comparable.
- Fluid ounces vs ounces: a fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures weight. They only line up roughly for water.
- Temperature differences: a change of 10 °C equals a change of 18 °F. Do not add 32 when converting a difference rather than a reading.
- Round at the end: keep full precision during a multi-step calculation and round only the final answer.
- Tons: a metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kg, while a US ton is 2,000 lb, or about 907.18 kg.

How many pounds are in a kilogram?
One kilogram is about 2.2046 pounds. For a quick mental estimate, double the kilograms and add 10 percent: 50 kg is roughly 100 + 10 = 110 lb (the exact answer is 110.23 lb).
How many square feet are in a square metre?
One square metre is 10.7639 square feet. So a 50 sq m room is about 538 sq ft, and a property advertised as 1,000 sq ft is about 92.9 sq m.
How do I convert km/h to mph?
Divide by 1.609344, or multiply by 0.6214. A speed limit of 100 km/h is about 62 mph, and 60 mph is about 96.6 km/h.
Is a litre bigger than a quart?
Slightly. A US liquid quart is 0.946 litres, so one litre is about 1.057 US quarts.
