Tips for QR codes that scan reliably
- Keep strong contrast between foreground and background — dark on light works best.
- Use High error correction if the code will be printed small or might get scuffed; it survives up to 30% damage.
- Shorter content produces a simpler, easier-to-scan pattern. Use a short link where you can.
Do the codes expire?
No. The content is encoded directly in the image, so there is no redirect service and nothing to expire. The QR code itself never expires, but a link inside it stops working if the destination page is removed.
What is a QR code generator?
A QR code generator turns a piece of information, such as a web address, a short message, your Wi-Fi login or an email address, into a square pattern that a phone camera can read in a second. This one draws the code live as you type and lets you download it as a PNG from 256 to 2048 pixels, or as an SVG.
The codes it makes are static: the content is stored in the pattern itself. That means no account, no scan tracking and no redirect link that can break. It also means you can’t change the destination after the code is printed, so if a link might change later, point the code at a page you control.
What each QR code type contains
- Link: the website address. If you leave out https:// the tool adds it, so example.com becomes https://example.com.
- Text: plain text that appears on the phone after scanning, such as a note, a serial number or instructions.
- Wi-Fi: a standard string such as WIFI:T:WPA;S:HomeNet;P:yourpassword;; that the cameras on most recent iPhone and Android phones recognize and offer to join. Choose WPA/WPA2, WEP or None to match your router.
- Email: a mailto: link with an optional subject line that opens a new message in the scanner’s email app.
Anyone who scans a Wi-Fi code can see the password inside it, so only display it where you would be happy to share the password itself, such as a guest network.
Worked example: picking the right size for print
The size menu sets the pixel dimensions of the PNG. To find how large it will print sharply, divide the pixels by the print resolution. At 300 dots per inch, a common standard for good print quality, 1024 ÷ 300 = 3.41 inches, or about 8.7 cm:

For anything larger, such as a banner, download the SVG. It is a vector file, so it scales to any size without blurring. A common rule of thumb is a scanning distance of about ten times the code’s width: a code 10 cm wide scans comfortably from roughly 1 meter away. Treat that as a starting point and test with your own phone.
Tips for QR codes people will actually scan
- Test before printing with at least one iPhone and one Android phone, from the distance people will really stand.
- Don’t invert the colors. Some scanners struggle with a light pattern on a dark background, so keep the foreground darker than the background.
- Leave empty space around it. The download has only a thin border in the background color; in a design, keep extra blank margin and don’t let text or images touch the code.
- Know the error correction trade-off. Low, Medium, Quartile and High can recover roughly 7%, 15%, 25% and 30% damage, but higher levels make the pattern denser. For codes on screens, Low or Medium is fine.
- Tell people what they get, for example “Scan for the menu” or “Scan to join Wi-Fi”, right next to the code.
More questions
Can I track how many people scan my QR code?
Not with the code itself, because static codes don’t pass through a server that could count scans. If you run a website with analytics, you can encode a link with campaign tags (such as UTM parameters) and see those visits in your own reports.
Can I change the link after printing?
No. The address is part of the pattern, so a new link needs a new code. To stay flexible, point the code at a page on your own site that you can later update or redirect.
How do I scan a QR code with my phone?
Open the camera app on an iPhone or most Android phones, point it at the code and tap the link or prompt that appears. On some Android phones you may need Google Lens or a scanner shortcut in the quick settings panel.
Can I put a logo in the middle of the code?
This QR code generator makes plain codes without logos. If you add one yourself in a design app, set error correction to High, keep the logo small and central, and test the final artwork on several phones.
