Time Zone Converter
Convert a time between cities and time zones anywhere in the world. Daylight saving time is handled automatically, so meeting times are always right.
How to convert time zones
- Choose the date and time you want to convert — or press Use current time.
- Select the time zone that time is in. It starts with your own.
- See the same moment in every city below. Add or remove cities as you need.
This time zone calculator uses your browser’s built-in time zone database (the IANA tz database), which includes daylight saving time rules for every region, so conversions stay correct all year round.
Frequently asked questions
Does it handle daylight saving time?
Yes. Offsets are calculated for the exact date you pick, so a meeting in March or November shows the correct local time even when clocks change.
What is UTC?
Coordinated Universal Time — the global reference time. Every time zone is described as an offset from UTC, for example UTC+05:00 for Pakistan.
How do I schedule a meeting across time zones?
Set the meeting time in your zone, add the cities of everyone attending and check that the time falls within working hours for each of them.
What does a time zone converter do?

A time zone converter takes one moment in time, such as 9:00 AM in Mumbai, and shows what the clock reads at that same moment in other places. Every zone is defined as an offset from UTC, so the converter works out the gap between two zones for the exact date you choose and adds or subtracts it.
The tricky part is that many offsets change during the year. The US, UK, Europe and parts of Australia move their clocks for daylight saving time (DST), while India, Pakistan, Japan and the UAE do not. That is why the gap between IST and New York is 10 hours 30 minutes in winter but 9 hours 30 minutes in summer. A good time zone calculator looks up the rules for the specific date instead of using a fixed number.
Worked examples: IST to EST and PST to IST
IST to EST (India to New York)
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year. New York uses EST (UTC−5) in winter and EDT (UTC−4) in summer.
- Winter: the gap is 5:30 + 5 = 10 hours 30 minutes. So 9:00 AM IST on Thursday 15 January 2026 is 10:30 PM EST on Wednesday 14 January.
- Summer: the gap shrinks to 9 hours 30 minutes. So 9:00 AM IST on Wednesday 15 July 2026 is 11:30 PM EDT on Tuesday 14 July.
- A 7:30 PM IST call lands at 9:00 AM in New York in winter and 10:00 AM in summer, which is why many India–US teams meet in the Indian evening.
PST to IST (California to India)
Pacific time is UTC−8 (PST) in winter and UTC−7 (PDT) in summer, so the gap to India is 13 hours 30 minutes in winter and 12 hours 30 minutes in summer.
- 10:00 AM PST on 15 January 2026 = 11:30 PM IST the same day.
- 10:00 AM PDT on 15 July 2026 = 10:30 PM IST the same day.
Common time zone offsets
| Zone | Region | Standard time | Daylight saving time |
|---|---|---|---|
| IST | India | UTC+5:30 | Not used |
| PKT | Pakistan | UTC+5 | Not used |
| GST | UAE (Dubai) | UTC+4 | Not used |
| GMT / BST | United Kingdom | UTC+0 (GMT) | UTC+1 (BST), last Sunday of March to last Sunday of October |
| CET / CEST | Germany, France, most of the EU | UTC+1 | UTC+2, same dates as the UK |
| EST / EDT | US East Coast | UTC−5 | UTC−4, second Sunday of March to first Sunday of November |
| CST / CDT | US Central | UTC−6 | UTC−5, same dates as EST/EDT |
| PST / PDT | US West Coast | UTC−8 | UTC−7, same dates as EST/EDT |
| JST | Japan | UTC+9 | Not used |
| AEST / AEDT | Sydney, Melbourne | UTC+10 (AEST) | UTC+11 (AEDT), first Sunday of October to first Sunday of April |
Note that not every part of a country follows the same rules. Queensland in Australia stays on AEST all year, and most of Arizona does not observe daylight saving time. Picking a city (for example Australia/Brisbane or America/Phoenix) in the converter above takes care of this.
Daylight saving time explained
Daylight saving time moves clocks forward one hour in spring and back one hour in autumn so evenings stay lighter in summer. Because countries switch on different dates, the gap between them changes for a few weeks each year. In 2026 the US moved its clocks on 8 March but the UK waited until 29 March, so for three weeks New York was only 4 hours behind London instead of the usual 5. The same thing happens in autumn: the UK returns to GMT on 25 October 2026, but the US waits until 1 November.
Tips for scheduling across time zones
- Always check the date as well as the time. A morning meeting in India is often the previous evening in the US.
- Avoid using the abbreviation EST in summer. If you mean New York time all year, write ET or name the city.
- Double-check meetings booked in March, April, October and November, when regions switch DST on different dates.
- Share times in the other person’s zone, or in UTC, in calendar invites and emails.
More questions
What is the time difference between India and the USA?
It depends on the US zone and the season. India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York in winter and 9 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer. It is 13 hours 30 minutes ahead of California in winter and 12 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer.
Does India have daylight saving time?
No. India uses IST (UTC+5:30) all year across the whole country, so only the other zone’s clock change affects the time difference.
Why does India use a half-hour offset?
India spans roughly 30 degrees of longitude, and its standard time is based on the 82.5° E meridian near the middle of the country. Each 15 degrees of longitude equals one hour, so 82.5° works out to five and a half hours ahead of Greenwich, giving UTC+5:30.
What is the difference between GMT and UTC?
For everyday purposes they show the same time. UTC is the modern scientific standard kept by atomic clocks, while GMT is also used as the name of the UK’s winter time zone. In summer the UK switches to BST (UTC+1), so UK time is no longer the same as GMT.
