How to calculate a tip

  1. Enter the bill total.
  2. Tap a tip percentage or type your own.
  3. Set how many people are splitting the bill.
  4. See the tip, the total and what each person owes.

Formula: tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100, total = bill + tip, and each share = total ÷ number of people.

In the US, 15%–20% is standard for table service, 18%–20% is common for good service, and 10% is typical for takeaway or counter service. Many countries include service in the bill — check the receipt first.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette experts usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter whichever figure you prefer.

How much should I tip?

15% for standard service, 18%–20% for good service and 20%+ for excellent service or large groups are common US guidelines.

Does it work in other currencies?

Yes. Pick your currency from the list — the maths is the same everywhere.

What does a tip calculator do?

Free online tip calculator by aimode.pro: work out the tip and split the bill between friends

A tip calculator adds a gratuity to a bill and, if you are sharing, splits the total evenly between everyone at the table. You choose the percentage and the number of people; the tool shows the tip, the new total and what each person owes, with an option to round each share up to a whole number.

It saves the awkward mental maths at the end of a meal, especially when the bill is an odd amount like $64.80 and three people are paying. Everything is worked out in your browser as you type, and the same maths works for any currency, whether you are paying in dollars, euros or rupees.

Worked example: 18% tip split three ways

  1. Bill: $64.80. Tip at 18%: 64.80 × 0.18 = $11.664, shown as $11.66.
  2. Total: 64.80 + 11.664 = $76.46.
  3. Each of three people: 76.464 ÷ 3 = $25.49.
  4. With rounding switched on, each person pays $26. The total becomes $78, so the tip rises to $13.20, about 20.4% of the bill.

How much to tip

In the United States

Tipping is a large part of pay for many service workers in the US. Around 15% is a common baseline for sit-down restaurant service, and 18% to 20% is widely used for good service. Before adding a tip, check the receipt for an automatic gratuity, which some restaurants add for larger groups.

In Germany

Service is included in German prices, so tips are smaller and more informal. People usually round up or add roughly 5% to 10%. Instead of leaving money on the table, you normally tell the server the total you want to pay when they bring the bill. On a €46.30 bill, saying “50” means a tip of €3.70, about 8%.

In India

Tipping in restaurants is voluntary. Under consumer-protection guidelines issued in 2022, restaurants should not add a service charge to the bill automatically, so check the bill before deciding what to leave.

More questions

What is a 15 percent tip on $50?

15% of $50 is $7.50, so the total is $57.50. Enter 50 as the bill and choose 15% to see it split between any number of people.

Do you tip on takeout orders?

It is optional. Many people leave around 10% for takeout or counter service, or nothing at all, since there is no table service. Tip more for large or complicated orders.

How do I split a bill with a tip between friends?

Add the tip to the whole bill first, then divide the total by the number of people. The calculator does both steps together and shows each person’s share and tip.

Is it rude not to tip in Germany?

It is not required, but rounding up is customary when service was good. Leaving nothing is more common for very small bills or poor service.
