How to calculate a discount

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the discount percentage. Add an extra discount if a coupon is applied on top.
  3. Optionally add sales tax and quantity.
  4. Read the final price, your savings and the real total discount.

Formula: sale price = original × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Stacked discounts are applied one after the other, so 20% off and then an extra 10% off is a 28% total discount, not 30%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off?

Multiply the price by 0.8. For example, 20% off $50 is $50 × 0.8 = $40, so you save $10.

Are two discounts added together?

No. The second discount is applied to the already-reduced price. 50% + 20% off is 60% off in total, not 70%.

Is tax charged before or after the discount?

In most places sales tax is charged on the discounted price, which is how this calculator works.

What is a discount calculator?

Free online discount calculator by aimode.pro: sale price, savings and stacked percent-off deals

A discount calculator tells you what you will actually pay after a percentage is taken off a price, and how much money you save. This one also handles a second “extra” discount on top of the first, sales tax and quantity, which is where most shoppers get the maths wrong.

It is useful for sale tags, festive-season offers, coupon codes and bulk deals, and for checking whether a “flat 50% off” banner really means what it seems.

Worked examples

Sale plus coupon (India)

  1. A pair of shoes costs ₹2,499 with 40% off: 2,499 × 0.60 = ₹1,499.40.
  2. A coupon gives an extra 10% off at checkout: 1,499.40 × 0.90 = ₹1,349.46.
  3. Total saved: 2,499 − 1,349.46 = ₹1,149.54, which is a total discount of 46%, not 50%.

Discount then sales tax (US)

A jacket is $89.99 with 30% off. The sale price is 89.99 × 0.70 = $62.99. With 8.25% sales tax on the discounted price, you pay 62.993 × 1.0825 = $68.19.

Working out the percent off

If an item was $80 and is now $56, the discount is (80 − 56) ÷ 80 × 100 = 30% off. And if something costs $45 after 25% off, the original price was 45 ÷ 0.75 = $60.

MRP and GST in India

In India the printed MRP already includes all taxes, so a discount on the MRP gives you the final price and you can leave the sales tax box at 0. In the US, prices on shelves usually exclude sales tax, so add your local rate to see the amount you will pay at the till.

Discount formula and quick reference

Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). The table shows the multiplier for common deals and what you would pay on an $80 item and a ₹2,000 item.

More questions

How do I calculate 30% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.70. For example, 30% off $80 is 80 × 0.70 = $56, so you save $24.

What is the discount formula for percentage off?

Discount % = (original price − sale price) ÷ original price × 100. A price cut from ₹1,000 to ₹750 is (1,000 − 750) ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 25% off.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If you paid ₹1,200 after 20% off, the original price was 1,200 ÷ 0.80 = ₹1,500.

Is a 50% discount the same as buy one get one free?

Only if you actually want two items. With 50% off you can buy one item at half price; with buy one get one free you must buy two items to get the same price per item.
